How To Deal With a Summer Air Conditioning Emergency

The hottest part of the year is coming, and as the heat rises, your HVAC system might struggle to keep up. Emergencies happen, which is why it’s essential to have a plan in place for an air conditioning emergency.

Stay Cool in the Heat With These HVAC Tips for the Summer

Predicting an air conditioning emergency can be a near-impossible task; luckily, we have a few precautions you can take to significantly reduce the odds of your system failing.

Check the Air Filter

If you aren’t checking and changing your air filters regularly, now is the time to do it. Multiple factors can affect how frequently your filters need to be replaced. If you live in an area with a lot of dust, pollen, or pollution, your filter can become oversaturated after only three weeks. Regular dirty filter replacement is imperative to reducing HVAC problems caused by dust and debris.

Clean Your Condenser Unit

A dirty condenser unit will struggle to transfer heat to the outside air, making it significantly less effective at cooling your home. To fix this, turn off the power to your condenser and spray the coils with water to clear any dirt or debris. This will allow your condenser unit to operate more efficiently.

Refill Refrigerant Levels

An air conditioner uses refrigerant to cool your facility. Eventually, the refrigerant will run low from constant use. Refilling it reduces the risk of your AC unit failing to pump cold air into your building.

Clean Air Ducts

Over time, debris builds up inside the ductwork of your facility. This buildup can restrict air flow, making it more difficult for your AC system to cool your building. Cleaning the debris can be a difficult task, so it’s best to let a professional handle it.

Calibrate Your Thermostat

A broken thermostat is a common HVAC problem that can cause your AC system to stop working as it should. It may have an issue reading the temperature and, in return, fail to cool your facility when it gets too hot. This is another job best dealt with by an HVAC service, as the mechanics of the system are complex.

Common HVAC Problems in the Summer

Even if you complete all of the above tasks, your AC system can still malfunction. One of the most common air conditioning emergencies in the summer is a burnt-out AC capacitor.

The capacitor stores energy needed to operate the air compressor. If it burns out, your AC system will stop functioning. Don’t try to fix this yourself, as these devices can electrocute you if you aren’t an expert.

Clogged drain lines are also fairly common in the warmer months. A clear drain line helps maintain proper humidity levels in your facility by filtering moisture out of the air and removing it from your facility.

The warm months can cause the lines to be clogged with dirt, mildew, mold, or even algae. Clogged lines can backflow water into your system and damage other AC unit components, leading to a severe air conditioning emergency.

The Importance of Quality Emergency AC Maintenance

While some light maintenance issues can be completed in-house, most air conditioning emergencies are best dealt with by professionals. If you’re not an expert in HVAC service, it’s best to outsource your emergency service. Attempting to handle it yourself can lead to further AC system damage or personal injury.

HVAC systems are complicated machines that shouldn’t be taken lightly. If your business has an air conditioning emergency, it’s safest to reach out to a local provider to handle it for you.
