Why Commercial Air Filters Are Important

Close up of a HEPA filter

Did you know that the air quality inside your office can be worse than the air outside in the biggest and most industrialized cities? This is what a growing body of scientific evidence, gathered over several years, suggests according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Fortunately, indoor air pollution can be kept at a minimum by doing one simple thing: replacing your air filter.

The Importance of Commercial Air Filters

As you can imagine, indoor air pollution can have a negative impact on the health of your building’s occupants. Given that most people spend a majority of their lives inside, especially during this pandemic, that is troubling information. In fact, illnesses caused by indoor conditions are so prevalent, there’s actually a term for it—sick building syndrome.

Headaches, eye irritations, nasal irritations, fatigue, and more are all symptoms that fall under this diagnosis. The only requirement is that the symptoms have to be correlated to the time spent inside a specific building. A good example of this is legionnaires’ disease, a type of pneumonia that’s spread through mist.

The solution to this problem is air conditioner filter replacement. Your commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system uses air filters to remove air borne dirt, allergens, pathogens, and more. However, catching all the stuff that shouldn’t be in your air builds up over time, making the filter less effective. To keep the air in your office safe to breathe, replacing the filter is a must.

How Often Should You Replace an Air Filter?

Now that you know how important air filters are for your daily operations, there’s one more question that needs to be answered: how often should an air filter be replaced? Many businesses choose to have their filters replaced twice a year, once in the spring and later in the fall. This frequency is fine for something like preventative maintenance, but not for your air filters.

Experts, like the professionals at A&G Services, recommend having your filter changed out at least once every other a month. If your indoor environment is spacious or frequently exposed to air contaminants, then you may want to have your filter replaced even sooner. When you need your filter replaced, it’s best to use a commercial air filter changing service. An experienced technician has the training to make sure everything is done properly.

Common Pollutants Air Filters Remove

Air filters work hard to keep the air you breathe clean. You may be surprised by the amount of disease causing particles they stop from reaching your nostrils. Here are some of the more common pollutants they take out of the air:

  • Particulate Matter: Particulate matter is more than just dust. This term refers to any solid or liquid substances that are small and light enough to be carried by the air. These particles don’t only come from outside; they are also generated indoors from activities like cooking or heating.
  • Chemicals: Chemicals are everywhere, from cigarette smoke to wet paint. Even cleaning supplies leave chemicals in the air.
  • Biological Contaminants: This includes bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other organic material. Biological contaminants are always present in places where groups of people gather.

Consequences of Not Replacing Your Filter

Changing your air filter doesn’t only keep your work environment healthy, but it can also provide business-related benefits as well. This includes:

  • Lower Energy Costs: A dirty air filter hampers air circulation. As a result, your HVAC has to work harder than it should to heat or cool your office. This leads to higher electricity bills.
  • Consistent Temperature: Your HVAC uses temperature sensors to know when it should kick on. A dirty filter can interfere with temperature readings.
  • Avoid Equipment Failure: The dirtier the filter is, the harder the fan has to work to get air flowing through the system. This extra wear and tear can shorten the lifespan of the HVAC.
